Motherhood's blessings and trials | Exploits of a Military Mama

Posted on | September 29, 2011 | 2 Comments

Sometimes, I think of those days leading up to the birth of Sullivan. And again, the birth of Arlo.

Two of the most defining moments in my life. Aside from the day I married my husband, these are the moments that have made me. Me.

I was terrified. Both times, really, though more so with Sullivan. Not a mothering instinct in my body, so I thought. I am the kind of woman who says, ?Suck it up. Find the solution. Get over it.? These sorts of mottos run through my mind every day, when really, I feel I should be more nurturing and kind. How could I mother? Would my children grow up to be callous and to feel unloved? Unadored?

No. I couldn?t let that happen. Something would have to give.

And it did. The moment I held Sullivan in my arms for the first time, I realized?.Oh. This is what is all about.

It?s not about new clothes and nights out and that college degree. Those things are nice. But they are nothing. They are nothing compared to seeing my husband in my son?s eyes. They are nothing compared to a stolen kiss in the middle of night as I smell my newborn?s head for the millionth time. Nothing.

I wish I could tell my old self that life was going to be better, more beautiful, more fulfilling than I ever could imagine. That I would love my husband more in those moments of new life than I did on the day we stood in front of God and all of creation to proclaim forever. We didn?t know forever yet. This is forever. I wish I could say to that scared girl that I was that, ?Things really will be okay.? That I would cry. That I would rock and rock and rock a baby until I wanted to scream. That sometimes? It wouldn?t be fun. But in the end?things are more than okay. I wish I could tell myself, as I faced the fear of two under two, that the love in my sons? eyes for each other would bring me to my knees. I wish I could tell myself that even though intimacy may change to make room for late night feedings and diaper changes, that nothing would be sexier than watching my husband love our boys.

I wish I could tell my scared self that breastfeeding can be beautiful. That it can be rocky and tiring and frustrating, but beautiful all the same.

I wish I could tell myself that it?s okay to want a clean home, a well-fed family, and to fit back in those pre-pregnancy jeans already, damnit. But I also wish I could tell myself to be kind. To have patience. And to know that, ?This too shall pass,? and I need to soak up every newborn minute.

I wish I could tell myself to pray more, but make your prayers worth it. I pray for the health, happiness, and safety of my family, now. I figure, if we have these three things, what else do we need? I don?t ask God to give us happiness in a certain way?just however he sees fit. I know some happiness has to come from ourselves, and I work to be the best Mother for my children, the best Wife for my husband, and the best ME for myself.

I pray for all the women in the world who want children. I pray that someday, they find the fulfilment motherhood has to offer. Anyone who is ready to stand up and meet this challenge deserves this beautiful joy. I pray for the women I know are struggling to conceive?but also the women who are struggling in private. I pray that they are granted the gift of motherhood. My heart aches for them.

Today, Arlo is ten-weeks-old and Sully is twenty-two-months old. These ten weeks have been a blur (and in some way, these almost two years have flown by), and sometimes I feel like I haven?t absorbed every minute the way I wish I had. Sometimes, I find myself dreaming of the days when my children are slightly older?slightly more self-sufficient. I think of being able to run to the store without mapping out three hours of my life. And I imagine nights that aren?t sleepless and dark. But then, I realize, this time is so short. It only is happening once, and then it vanishes into the air, and I?m left with dim memories of these hazy days. So I bring myself back to this moment. To my now.

Govt plans radical tax cut overhaul | Pattaya GoGo

First-home scheme altered to help poor

The government plans a review of the tax system, including possible cuts in personal tax deductions and tax privileges for corporate investors.

Finance Minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala yesterday said tax reform is critical for helping the economy to remain competitive.

Reform would cover corporate, individual and consumption taxes.

The Yingluck Shinawatra government says it will slash the corporate tax rate, now at 30%, to 23% next year and to 20% by 2013.

The government has also approved temporary cuts in excise taxes on fuel and a plan to offer tax rebates for first-time buyers of new cars and homes.

Thailand?s corporate tax rate is considered relatively high, with only the Philippines charging a similar rate within Asean. Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam charge a 25% rate, while Singapore charges 17%.

For personal taxes, only 9 million people file an annual tax return, representing less than one-third of the labour force. Just 2.5 million actually pay income tax after deductions, and only 18,000 people are estimated to pay tax at the 37% maximum rate.

Mr Thirachai said the ministry would review tax incentives offered by the Board of Investment (BoI).

?Many other countries offer fewer incentives to encourage investment and limit benefits only to industries deemed critical or beneficial to their economy,? he said.

The BoI offers investors benefits such as special corporate tax rates, waivers or deductions on duties for imported materials and special deductions on utility expenses.

Mr Thirachai said deductions for personal income taxes, such as deductions on insurance premiums or investment in long-term equity funds, would also be reviewed and possibly cut.

Consumption-based taxes may also rise. Mr Thirachai noted that for cars, an excise tax is paid only upon the purchase of a car.

?But many countries collect taxes on an annual basis, with higher charges imposed for more expensive luxury cars,? he said.

?Another proposal under study is whether we should collect taxes not from investors, but from the Stock Exchange of Thailand itself,? he said. Capital gains taxes on stock investments are not currently subject to personal income tax.

Korn Chatikavanij, a former finance minister and deputy leader of the opposition Democrats, said the government should rethink its priorities. ?So far, we have seen this government push spending initiatives but also cut tax rates. We shouldn?t be depending on debt to finance spending,? he said.

Mr Korn said he was surprised the government decided against pushing forward a land and building tax, a bill that represented a key instrument for reform of the tax system.

The bill, written by the Abhisit Vejjajiva government, imposes an annual tax on buildings and land, including penalty taxes on landholdings left undeveloped.

The current government must reaffirm the bill this week in parliament or it will be automatically rejected.

Mr Korn said the draft law is a major step towards increasing social equality. Some 90% of tax revenues came from income, with little collected from assets, a structure which he said benefited the wealthy.

Pattamawadee Suzuki, dean of the faculty of economics at Thammasat University, agreed the government should pass the land and building tax.

She said the government should consider other taxes as well, such as an environmental tax, to help improve resource use within the country.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry yesterday amended its first-home programme to increase benefits for low-income buyers.

Boonsong Teriyapirom, a deputy finance minister, said tax credits could be used for up to four years from the date of transfer of the home.

From now until the end of 2012, new homebuyers may claim a tax credit of up to 10% of the purchase price of a new home or condo priced up to 5 million baht for a period of up to five years. The tax credit, limited to 100,000 baht per year, will offset annual tax liability under the programme.

Mr Boonsong said low-income buyers with no tax liability may choose to delay the use of the deductions under the programme for up to four years after the purchase of the property. Under current tax rates, workers earning less than 20,000 baht per month are exempted from income tax.

He said the ministry is also considering a programme offering 0% interest for home mortgages on properties worth up to one million baht to help low-income residents.

Property experts welcomed the clarifications to the programme.

Issara Boonyoung, president of Housing Business Association, said the new rules simplified the tax calculation process and helped buyers by structuring the benefits as a tax credit rather than a deduction on taxable income.

Wason Khongchantr, managing director of Modern Property Consultants, noted that most first-time home buyers typically aimed at units priced below 3 million baht.

Manning leads Giants over Eagles 29-16; Vick hurt

(AP) ? Eli Manning delivered the knockout blow after Michael Vick got knocked out of another game.

Manning threw four touchdown passes, including two to Victor Cruz, and the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Eagles 29-16 Sunday.

Vick started despite suffering a concussion in last week's 35-31 loss at Atlanta. He left with a broken right hand in the fourth quarter after helping the Eagles overcome a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to take a 16-14 lead.

It's uncertain how long the left-handed quarterback will be out. He'll have a CT scan Monday.

"I don't know anything right now except my hand is broken," Vick said.

Vick wasn't happy with the hit, either. He completed a 23-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin before taking a hard shot from Chris Canty.

"I felt I got hit late. No flag," Vick said. "At some point something catastrophic is gonna happen. Not to blame the refs, but more precautions should be taken. I'm on the ground all the time in the pocket."

Without their Pro Bowl quarterback, the Eagles (1-2) hardly look like the "Dream Team" that entered the season with Super Bowl or bust expectations.

Manning threw a pair of TD passes in the fourth quarter to rally New York. The Giants (2-1) have won two in a row and snapped a six-game losing streak against their division rivals.

"It's always good to beat those guys, especially here," Manning said. "They have good players and we new we had to come in with the same game plan as last year and just finish it this time."

In their previous meeting at the Meadowlands last December, the Eagles rallied from a 21-point deficit with 8:17 left, and won 38-31 on DeSean Jackson's 65-yard punt return for a touchdown on the last play.

The teams traded a lot of trash talk in the offseason and during the week. The Giants backed it up.

"I think I responded today," Giants safety Antrel Rolle said. "I'm not scared of anyone on the field. I thing it's more mental than physical. They tried to get in my head sticking their hands in my face, blocking me after the play, but if they want to fight, I'll fight anyone, but in between the lines, I'm too smart to get thrown out of the game."

Manning threw for 254 yards, and Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 86 and had 53 more receiving, including a TD. Filling in because Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon are out, Cruz had three catches for 110 yards and his first two career scores.

Aaron Ross, who was benched in the second half of New York's win over St. Louis last Monday, had two interceptions that led to 14 points.

LeSean McCoy had 128 yards rushing and one TD for Philadelphia, which has blown two fourth-quarter leads in consecutive games.

After McCoy was stopped for a 3-yard loss by Michael Boley on fourth-and-1 from the Giants 43, Manning drove New York in for the go-ahead score. He tossed a 28-yard TD pass to a well-covered Cruz to put the Giants up 20-16. Jacobs ran in for the 2-point conversion to make it 22-16.

Cruz outfought Nnamdi Asomugha and Jarrad Page to make the catch near the goal line and fell into the end zone, losing the ball after he crossed.

"It means the world to me because a lot of people were saying our receivers were down and who would step up and I was happy to be that guy that stepped up to help my team," Cruz said.

Mike Kafka replaced Vick on the ensuing possession and Ross intercepted his first pass. Manning connected with Bradshaw for an 18-yard TD pass to put the game away.

Vick finished 16 of 23 for 176 yards and one interception. He ran for 31 yards. Vick looked shaky early, but made a few nice throws before leaving.

He didn't seem all that happy after the Eagles kicked a field goal to pull within 14-13 at halftime. Vick looked angry as he walked off the field, waving his arms and pointing. Jackson tried to calm him down, but Vick didn't seem interested in listening.

"He was just frustrated with the offensive line," Jackson said.

The Eagles dominated time of possession by a nearly 3-1 margin throughout the first three quarters, but didn't take the lead until the final minute of the third when Alex Henery kicked a 21-yard field goal.

It was a disappointing end to a drive that began at the 10 and stalled at the Giants 1. The Eagles had a first down at the 2 and failed on four runs to get it in. McCoy didn't get one of the handoffs.

Philadelphia got a lucky bounce on that drive. Vick ran 8 yards for a first down on third-and-6 from the 14. Vick fumbled at the end of the run, but the ball bounced forward and left tackle Jason Peters caught it in the air. Peters rumbled for 5 more yards.

Vick left the game for X-rays on his right hand after that drive and was temporarily replaced by Kafka. But he returned during a time out while Kafka was in the huddle and played one more drive before going to the bench.

Steve Smith made a crucial mistake on the first ball that came his away against his former team. Smith left the Giants for Philadelphia and returned ahead of schedule from knee surgery to be ready for Week 1. Vick's third-down pass on Philadelphia's first drive hit Smith in the hands and bounced in the air to Ross, who caught it at the Giants 8. Ross returned the interception 19 yards, and Manning needed six plays to lead New York into the end zone.

Rookie linebacker Casey Matthews, who was moved from the middle to the weakside spot earlier in the week, bit badly on a play-fake that allowed Jacobs to get wide open. Manning's perfect throw hit him in stride and the Giants went up 7-0.

Manning connected with Cruz late in the first to give New York a 14-0 lead. Cruz caught a short pass at the Giants 34, but broke Kurt Coleman's tackle and sprinted down the sideline. Cruz again got away from Coleman, when he collided with Asomugha at the Eagles 46, and the second-year pro cruised into the end zone for his first career score.

After the Giants turned it over on downs at the Eagles 29, Vick got going. He had completions of 13 and 17 yards on a drive that was finished off by McCoy's nifty 11-yard TD run. McCoy broke a tackle, cut outside and ran into the end zone to get the Eagles within 14-10.

Notes: Miami Heat star LeBron James was on the field before the game. He was in town to play in an exhibition basketball game with other NBA All-Stars at The Palestra. ... The Giants were again without Pro Bowl DE Osi Umenyiora and first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara. WRs Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon also were sidelined. Hixon is out for the season. ... The Eagles didn't have defensive ends Darryl Tapp and Juqua Parker. ... The Eagles reshuffled all three of their starting linebackers this week, moving each one into a new spot. ... Vick lined up at receiver for one play with Ronnie Brown in the shotgun formation behind center. McCoy took the direct snap and ran 3 yards.

As the world grapples with an obesity epidemic the fact is undisputable that if left unchecked it will not only cause endless health problems with the citizenry but cripple economies. Managing the obesity epidemic is not simply a need to ensure the personal health of the citizens but undeniable fact for national economic survival. This is evidenced by the daunting predictions that health care costs will treble by 2015 with estimated national expenditure in the United States alone of $4 trillion, $950 billion associated to obesity as the total figure later approaches twenty percent of GDP. From both the humanitarian and financial bottom-line on the need of managing the obesity epidemic must sit at the task one for the health, fitness and exercise industry.

To solve this problem, a new route must be taken as it is clear ?health and fitness? must be embraced within both the youth market, in both the home as well school systems and the most efficient route to adults, the workplace.

The next series of steps comes in the workplace which in many ways is the classroom for improving the health of the adult population in teaching proper dietary habits and merging exercise into daily lives. Whether sponsored by employers realizing it will reduce employee healthcare expenses or proactive government programs recognizing the same savings, the four major areas to be implemented in the workplace are:

  • Offer a financial incentive plan that rewards employees for taking part in a standardized Health Care screening
  • Screening streams into free diet plan and exercise plans as well as programs to eliminate smoking and cull alcohol and drug abuse
  • Where applicable, make appropriate adjustments to workplace cafeterias such that healthy food options are stressed with the elimination of negative habit forming concerns. This will be controversial to some but one glance at most workplace cafeteria?s will not them as a harbinger of poor grade ?foods? or simply a series vending machine that in-fact propel obesity. Employers, with soaring health care costs must address this issue without further delay as this ?cost? will hit their financial statements quickly as well as harm employee health.
  • Offer exercise programs / classes both during and after work hours, with the former well known to not only improve health but worker productivity. This must be company wide as ?wellness programs? can no longer be the sole domain of white-collar or executive branches. This will further involve short breaks particularly in areas that involve manual labour, which will in-turn see a reduction of workplace injury and improving productivity.

While some will find this a massive shift in organizational behaviour in business it creates a significant positive financial incentive for employers and thus makes sense from not only a humanitarian level but from the ?bottom-line?. Studies have suggested that employers with proactive wellness programs reduce health care costs by approximately twenty-five per-cent with a near ten-fold rate of return on the investment.

Summarily, workplace fitness does not improve the health of the population but there is ample motivation for all employers to embrace.

Join us all this week for insights into workplace fitness.

UBS CEO quits over rogue trader scandal

Oswald Gruebel resigned on Saturday as chief executive of troubled Swiss bank UBS, saying he took the blame for the $2.3 billion loss run up in alleged rogue trading in its investment banking division.

The bank, which said it would beef up risk controls under an accelerated restructuring of that part of its business, named its Europe, Middle East and Africa head Sergio Ermotti to replace Gruebel on an interim basis.

Gruebel, appointed in 2009 to rebuild UBS after a near collapse, said in a message to staff: "That it was possible for one of our traders in London to inflict a multibillion loss on our bank through unauthorized trading shocked me, as it did everyone else, deeply."

The incident had global repercussions, including political ones. "I did not take the step of resigning lightly. I am convinced that it is in the best interests of UBS to approach the future with a new leader at the top," he said.

Gruebel, a 67-year-old former trader who helped turn around Credit Suisse a decade ago, was brought out of retirement to try to revamp UBS after it almost collapsed in 2008 under the weight of more than $50 billion lost on toxic assets.

UBS Chairman Kaspar Villiger said the board of directors, who met in Singapore this week, had not lost confidence in Gruebel despite the scandal and had tried to convince him to stay on to allow a more orderly succession next year.

Chris Wheeler, analyst at Mediobanca said he was "very surprised" the board had agreed to let Gruebel go given the restructuring already under way at the investment bank.

"It certainly puts at risk what they were trying to achieve, given it's a recovery stock and it has had four CEOs now since 2007. It could see a lot of people capitulate on their hope for an early recovery for the stock," he said.

Ermotti, who Villiger said was a strong candidate to replace Gruebel permanently, told a conference call with journalists the bank would review its risk controls at group level, and an internal investigation of what went wrong at the investment bank should conclude in 10 to 14 days.

Opportunity out of disaster
More details of changes at the division, which would scale back but not exit its fixed income business, would be revealed at an investor day already planned for November 17 in New York, Ermotti said.

A 51 year-old from Switzerland's Italian-speaking region of Ticino, he was already being groomed as a possible successor since he joined UBS in April from UniCredit after he was passed over in a management reshuffle at the Italian bank following the departure of CEO Alessandro Profumo.

Villiger said he had no doubts about the future of investment bank head Carsten Kengeter, whose fate had also hung in the balance, saying he and his team had done an "excellent job" to limit losses from the unauthorized trades by quickly closing the positions.

He contrasted their actions with hesitation that caused Societe Generale to run up a 4.9 billion euros ($6.6 billion) loss on rogue trades by Jerome Kerviel three years ago that felled that bank's then-chairman and CEO Daniel Bouton.

Villiger declined to comment on whether Kengeter could still be a candidate to take over as CEO, saying only the board was looking at both internal and external candidates and should decide on a permanent replacement within six months.

Villiger, a former Swiss finance minister who also faced calls to resign over the scandal, said the bank was sticking to plans for former Bundesbank chief Axel Weber to join the board next year and take over as chairman in 2013, adding Weber would be involved in the choice of a new CEO.

He said he did not favor splitting off investment banking from the rest of the bank, but said the board wanted Ermotti to speed up an overhaul of the division to better align it with UBS's core business of managing wealthy clients' money.

"We want to turn this disaster into an opportunity," he said.

Ermotti said there could be more job cuts in the investment bank but did not expect them to be extensive.

UBS had already said in August it would axe 3,500 more jobs to shave 2 billion Swiss francs off annual costs, with almost half from the investment bank, which had grown to almost 18,000 staff from 16,500 a year ago.

'Turnaround' legacy
The alleged rogue trader, Kweku Adoboli, was "sorry beyond words for what had happened" and was "appalled at the scale of the consequences of his disastrous miscalculations," his lawyer Patrick Gibb said at a court hearing in London on Thursday.

The 31-year old did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody until a further hearing next month.

Rogue UBS trader is 'sorry beyond words'

Clients pulled nearly 400 billion Swiss francs ($442 billion) -- almost a fifth of client assets -- from UBS after the bank was battered in the financial crisis as by a prolonged dispute with the U.S. tax authorities, and posted the biggest annual corporate loss in Swiss history.

Villiger said Gruebel had achieved an "impressive turnaround and strengthened UBS fundamentally." But other private banks are now circling again to nab clients worried about reputational risk in the wake of the rogue trader affair.

Gruebel, who had already foregone his bonus for the last two years, would get no severance package as he had resigned.

UBS's largest shareholder, Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, met the bank's management earlier in the week and in a rare statement expressed its disappointment. It urged firm action to restore confidence and wanted details of how the bank would tighten risk controls.

GIC had not been consulted over Saturday's management change, Villiger said.

UBS's board meeting, one of four regular ones per year, had originally been due to end on Friday ahead of the UBS-sponsored Singapore Formula One motor racing Grand Prix on Sunday, when executives will be trying to reassure big clients.

Asked whether UBS might reconsider its Formula One sponsorship now motor racing fan Gruebel is gone, Ermotti, who flew back to Zurich overnight, said the deal was a long-term commitment so he could not review it even if he wanted to.

In 2007, former UBS CEO Peter Wuffli was ousted unceremoniously at a board meeting in Spain to coincide with the America's Cup yachting event there, in which UBS was sponsoring a team.

Prosecutors seek life sentence for Knox (AP)

PERUGIA, Italy ? Italian prosecutors asked an appeals court on Saturday to uphold the conviction of Amanda Knox for the murder of her British roommate and to sentence her to life in prison.

The 24-year-old American sat motionless as Prosecutor Giancarlo Costagliola made his request. The prosecutor also sought the same sentence for Knox's co-defendant, former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, at the end of two days of closing arguments by the prosecutors.

A verdict could come as soon as defense teams and a lawyer for the victim's family have their final chance to address the jury.

Both defendants had been convicted by a lower court of the 2007 slaying in the university town of Perugia, central Italy. The lower court had sentenced Knox to 26 years and Sollecito to 25 years for the slaying of Meredith Kercher.

The two deny wrongdoing.

Life imprisonment is Italy's harshest sentence.

Earlier on Saturday, another prosecutor in the trial, Manuela Comodi, defended the forensic evidence that had been used to convict Knox of the murder, firing back at an independent review that criticized the investigation and the work of police in the case.

The defendants appealed the 2007 convictions. Prosecutors in Italy also can appeal, and they did so in the Knox case, using this latest trial to try for the harsher penalty.

Comodi tried to keep the jurors interested in the highly technical discussion about DNA testing and forensic science by using down-to-earth expressions and simple language. At one point, to explain DNA testing, she made references to ingredients used in pasta dishes; at another she pulled out a bra from her bag, seeking to illustrate how she thought the garment was cut from the victim's body.

The DNA is crucial in the case, where no clear motive for the brutal killing has emerged.

Has Obama quit already? (The Week)

New York ? Judging by his plans for job creation and deficit reduction, the president has given up on policy accomplishments in favor of playing politics

The last few weeks of polling data have been so bad for Barack Obama that pundits have begun speculating whether the president might simply decide not to run for a second term in 2012. Still, many question whether Obama could truly bring himself to walk away from the world's most powerful executive position, even if it became clear that he couldn't win in 2012???and that his presence on the ticket might damage Democrats running in Senate and House races below him on the ticket.

However, the real question is whether Obama has essentially quit already.

Obama has offered two major proposals this month in an attempt to change the narrative, to reverse the perception that his presidency is floundering with the poor economy. The first proposal deals with job creation, which is how most Americans gauge economic success. The president had not offered any new thoughts on job creation since the first stimulus package, instead issuing a series of predictions that massive job creation was just around the corner. Vice President Joe Biden spent the spring of 2010 talking about a "Summer of Recovery" that never arrived, and by the summer of 2011, job creation stopped entirely???with zero net jobs created in August.

That put pressure on the president to come up with a new plan, and the White House started generating plenty of buzz by hyping Obama's work in August for a new plan in September. They raised expectations for a game-changer by insisting on unveiling the plan at a joint session of Congress. Instead of offering a new plan, however, Obama gave an ambiguous sketch of a plan. It took the White House several more days to actually deliver the proposal to Capitol Hill, along with its $447 billion price tag.?

The president has more than a year to go before the next election, but Obama has stopped governing and has shifted entirely to campaign mode.

The plan itself broke no new ground. Indeed, it closely resembles the 2009 stimulus bill, with its mix of infrastructure spending, temporary tax breaks, and another round of bailouts for states. But if the rehashed jobs plan was a passive disappointment, Obama's new deficit reduction plan is an aggressive partisan attack???the very kind that Obama blasted in his joint-session speech earlier in the month. Obama warned his political opponents that voters wouldn't wait for an election 14 months away to deliver solutions, and that Democrats and Republicans had to work together now to solve the big problems facing the nation:

"Already, we're seeing the same old press releases and tweets flying back and forth. Already, the media has proclaimed that it's impossible to bridge our differences. And maybe some of you have decided that those differences are so great that we can only resolve them at the ballot box. But know this: The next election is 14 months away. And the people who sent us here???the people who hired us to work for them???they don't have the luxury of waiting 14 months. "

Instead of working with Republicans to craft a deficit-reduction plan that could pass Congress, Obama instead filled his with tax hikes that even his own party rejected in 2009 and 2010 in the effort to fund Obama's signature health-care overhaul bill. Our colleague David Frum calls it a "stunt" that would derail economic growth, if it ever had a prayer of passing the House. Democratic strategist Mark Penn wonders at The Huffington Post why Obama would want to turn himself into another Walter Mondale???and also why Obama passed on the opportunity to work on comprehensive tax reform with Republicans rather than get stuck in "the thicket of class warfare." Why not work on co-opting a big Republican issue as Bill Clinton did with welfare reform, Penn asks, and seize the mantle of leadership?

Penn wonders why Obama didn't think to work with House Republicans on deficit reduction, but he might have asked why Obama didn't bother to work with Senate Democrats on the jobs bill, either. The White House apparently forgot to consult with its own allies in the upper chamber when writing the rerun of the 2009 stimulus bill, only to discover to their embarrassment that it won't pass the Senate. At least six Senate Democrats have gone on the record in the media expressing opposition to passing it in its current form, and not just purple-state incumbents up for tough re-election fights (like Joe Manchin and Robert Casey), but also those in relatively safe seats like Tom Carper (Delaware) and Barbara Mikulski (Maryland). Even Dianne Feinstein in solid-blue California talked to the media about her concerns over the cost and effectiveness of Obama's plan.

Obama mailed in both proposals rather than engage in the hard work of governance. If Obama had any interest in actually passing his deficit-reduction plan, he would not have filled it with tax hikes that have floated around the Beltway for years???and which both Republicans and Democrats have rejected in the past. The jobs bill was even less creative than his approach to deficit reduction, cribbed from a failed and costly exercise in central economic control. Obama didn't bother to put much effort into either because he has no intention of doing the hard work needed to accomplish actual deficit reduction or improve the job-creation climate. The president has more than a year to go before the next election, but Obama has stopped governing and has shifted entirely to campaign mode. This is what it looks like when a president quits.

Family celebration: Utah women travel to India to meet with ...

Both have sponsored children through the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA), a Kansas City, Mo.-based charity that works in 25 countries to pair up needy children and elderly people with sponsors. In the case of Kaiser and Carr, they each donate $30 per month that is allocated for their sponsored child?s education, clothing, nutrition, and household items needed for basic comfort and good health.

Founded in 1981 by Bob Hentzen and his brothers Jim (d. 1993) and Bud, their sister Nadine Pearce, and friend Jerry Tolle (d. 1995), CFCA is dedicated to the principles of Catholic social teaching. From the beginning, the founders saw sponsorship as a perfect opportunity to both provide ongoing assistance to the poor and allow the poor to share their gifts with sponsors in the United States.

CFCA sponsors and the children and elderly people they support exchange letters and photographs, building a long-distance relationship.

For Carr and Kaiser, though, long distance wasn?t enough. Like many sponsors, they decided they would meet their children in person. They left Salt Lake City Oct. 10, and returned Oct. 23.

Family celebration

Kaiser has been a CFCA sponsor for three years, supporting Sumanth Bala (8). She and Carr set out for India together, but when they reached Hyderabad, their ways separated. Carr, a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, traveled further south through Bangalore to a village in the Kolar gold fields where the girl she has sponsored for five years, Jaya Rakani, 15, lives.

Sumanth lives in a village outside Hyderabad. Neither child lives in a home with electricity or running water. Their American visitors stayed in nearby retreat houses and convents.

Before going to Sumanth?s home to meet him, lunch was planned at the CFCA Hyderabad office, and to Kaiser?s surprise, Sumanth and his mother came to the lunch to greet her. Later, they would travel to Sumanth?s house in a rural village in Warangal Province.

?I was amazed to find out that my visit to Sumanth had become a family celebration,? said Kaiser. ?When I arrived in the rural village with Father Gade Prakesh, the door to their house opened and 24 family members came out. I was overwhelmed.?

She said it was very strange to walk into the house and find a picture of herself hanging on the wall.

Both Carr and Kaiser were surprised that some 8,000 people were in Hyderabad to greet the Americans, most of them mothers of children who were sponsored.

?So much is done for these children and for CFCA by the mothers? groups,? Carr said. ?They had arranged lunch for us and hours of entertainment. People did so many dances for us. How they must have practiced!?

Everywhere they went, Carr said, they were mobbed by children, some who have sponsors, many who need them.

?They live in tiny homes, so spare, but neat,? added Carr.

Accountability

Kaiser said she was impressed with the annual report supplied for every sponsor, and that CFCA Hyderabad has a folder for each sponsored child. In each folder is an exact accounting of every $30 donation.

Both women spent days near the villages where their sponsored children live. They were shown the CFCA printing shop and book binding enterprise.

Carr, who teaches pre-school special education at Provo?s Farrer School, was most interested in the Indian educational system. She also saw a community center where tailoring is taught.

?The Salesian fathers and brothers do so much for the abandoned street children in Bangalore,? Carr said. ?And the Kolar gold fields used to be very profitable, but with prices what they are now, the fields are closed and the slums are very close by.?

Jaya and her mother, Carr learned, live with Jaya?s uncle in a house that has a shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes. Like Sumanth, Jaya is shy and has a beautiful smile.

After spending days with their sponsored children, the American sponsors met again in Delhi, where they saw the Taj Mahal. They shared their experiences ? Kaiser had visited a leper colony where whole families live together.

?There was so much to see when we were among the poor that I felt a little out of place at the Taj Mahal,? Kaiser said. ?It was an amazing trip, and I came home feeling closer to Sumanth. When I went there, I took him a little red fire truck that he carried everywhere he went.

?I felt a strong sense of community among the mothers,? she said.

Carr, who has spoken to groups about CFCA since she returned, is also sponsoring two more children, one in Mexico and one in Liberia.

An essay about my mother - Motherhood Cafe

My mother is absolutely amazing. She has had four kids, and has done so much for each of us. She doesn't favor any one over the other, no matter if one does something great, while the others just sit back and watch. The next time she just makes sure to encourage the others to take action.

When she was pregnant with me, her third child, she decided to start home schooling. A big factor in it was that my sister, the oldest child, was in fourth grade, and had already changed schools about seven times. It worked out well. She always keeps it going. I think it was a good choice for us. As proof you can take my two older siblings. They have both graduated high-school, and gone on to college. The oldest has graduated college, and gotten married.

She finds tons of opportunities for us, such as sports or music, or just random little things for us to do.

She encourages us with everything we do, and shows us that we can do anything if we set our minds to it. Because of what she's shown me, I don't think I will ever be afraid of what the future may hold.

A while before I came into existence, my mother had gotten saved. She taught all of her children about the Lord. She kept the Bible as a guide to raising us. In turn we all got saved, and the Lord has continued to be the guide in our lives even when we're not around her.

She answers our questions to the best of her knowledge, whether it be about the Bible or otherwise. She always seems to have the right answers, and if we don't understand what she meant the first time she finds a new way to explain it.

She is an amazing cook, and that's not just coming from her family. Many comment on how good her food is. They know this because she loves to have people over for dinner, or parties, or just because. She is a great hostess, and it's always a blast having people over, even though there are extra dishes afterwards.

She is very easy-going, but she requires obedience. So, we all know how to take orders with a good attitude. She taught us common sense, so we know what orders not to take, and also how to not take them kindly. So as not to offend.

She can handle a ton. Over a year ago now, one of the times my dad was deployed, my mother's mom died. While it was hard enough, for her mother to die, with her husband deployed at the time, she also found that multiple of her close friends weren't really her friends after all. Even while dealing with all of this, she was a wonderful mother, and she kept teaching us. Not just with school, but also with her life.

I have learned so much from her, and I hope to be a bit like her, if not more. I want my future family to grow up much like I have, because it has been an amazing experience, and I have learned so much.
