Facebook facts that make you look worldly and popular may say more about you to a hiring manager than anything else. Photos of your trip to Bali; status updates on how much you enjoyed reading ?War and Peace?; and thousands of Facebook friends apparently translate into a job candidate who will do better on the job.

At least those are the findings of a new study by a trio of universities that looked at how Facebook profiles predict job success.

?We came up with a Facebook personality score and that correlates with job performance,? said Donald Kluemper, a management professor at Northern Illinois University, who, along with researchers at Auburn University and the University of Evansville, conducted the study that appeared in the recent issue of the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.

The researchers looked at five personality traits among Facebook users, including conscientiousness, emotional stability, agreeableness, extraversion and openness. The traits are known as the ?Big Five? in psychological lingo and are often used in organizational studies, Kluemper said.

The Facebook users, 56 total, were given a personality score by independent evaluators and six months later those ratings were compared to evaluations completed by the supervisors who the users worked for. And guess what? The higher the Facebook personality score the higher the job performance rating by supervisors.

So what gets you a high personality rating exactly?

Here?s how Kluemper broke it down:

Conscientiousness: This is someone who appears to be well organized and hard-working, and that?s reflected in the way they set up their Facebook page. Maybe there are a lot of detailed posts and profile, or photos of the person working hard at something.

Emotional stability: You seem to be someone who looks at the glass as half full, and seem able to handle stress. That means your page is lacking lots of negative and down in the dumps type posts; and you?re not overly emotional in images or in what you write.

Agreeableness: This is all about someone who?s able to get along and doesn?t engage in Facebook conflicts, especially heated debates with friends.

Extraversion: Here?s where lots of Facebook friends come in handy because lots of friends is a predictor of extraversion. Also, photos of you in social situations with lots of people are a good thing, compared to pictures of you alone on your couch.

Openness: Travel and intellect play into this category. If you appear open to different experiences and viewpoints, then you?re viewed as open. If you?re posting stuff about classic literature you?ll probably score higher than if you?re dishing about the latest trashy novel. And photos of international travel are also a big plus.

Based on this research, scoring high in all these categories means you?re more likely to be an ideal employee. That kind of predictor would probably make any hiring manager salivate, especially in today?s tough job market where they have to weed through thousands of applicants.

Kluemper is not advocating that HR use his groundbreaking social-media research just yet. ?This is one study and the sample size is not that large,? he explained. ?A lot more studies need to be done.?

But, he admitted some ill-advised HR folks may try and hang their hats on this one study, and that worries him because using such personality tests could be on sketchy legal grounds.

Payroll tax vote exposes divisions within each party

Despite the bipartisan support for the payroll tax bill, blocks in both parties had reservations: Republicans angry that the measure was not paid for, and Democrats worried about the health of Social Security.

In a rush to recess, Congress on Friday extended a payroll tax holiday and other expiring measures through the end of the year in rare bipartisan votes that nevertheless exposed internal divisions in both parties.

In addition to averting a 2 percent hike in payroll taxes that would have been effective March 1, the bill also blocked a 27 percent hike in reimbursements to physicians treating Medicare patients and extended jobless benefits for some 13 million unemployed Americans.

Despite broad support for all three measures, the path to a final deal was difficult and protracted. Moreover, the votes in both the House and Senate signaled rifts within party ranks on core principles.

On the House side, 91 Republicans broke with their own leadership to oppose extending a $100 billion payroll tax cut without spending cuts to pay for it. The bill passed 293 to 132, with the critical support of 147 Democrats, one more than the number of Republicans who voted in favor.

The Senate passed the measure with the minimum 60 votes required to block a filibuster. This close vote in the Senate came as somewhat of a surprise, since a two-month extension of this package had passed the Senate last December on a strong, bipartisan vote, 89 to 10.

At the time, the sticking point had been the House, where GOP lawmakers, in the majority, tried to hold out for a full year extension, paid for with spending cuts. Up against a Dec. 31 deadline, Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio informed his caucus that they had no option but to back down to avoid a payroll tax hike that was sure to hurt GOP prospects in November elections.

Had Congress failed to act, some 160 million Americans stood to lose a tax break worth about $1,000 a year.

?This shows that even in an election year, this divided Congress can still accomplish something to help boost the economy,? Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York, who is charged with messaging for Senate Democrats, said in a statement Friday.

When Congress took up the issue again in 2012, House Republicans again tried to hold out for spending cuts to fully offset the $160 billion cost of the package. But facing a new expiration deadline on Feb. 29, House GOP leaders gave up on Monday and agreed to extend the payroll tax without spending cuts to pay for it.

But they did win significant concessions from Democrats in negotiations to extend unemployment insurance and the so-called ?doc fix.?? These include:

? Cutting $5 billion from a program from President Obama?s signature health-care reform, targeted to cut smoking and obesity. The savings help fund payment rates for Medicare.

Dutch queen's son seriously injured by avalanche

VIENNA, Austria (AP) ? An avalanche buried and seriously injured the second son of Dutch Queen Beatrix while he skied off marked trails Friday in the westernmost corner of Austria and he was rushed to the intensive care unit of an Innsbruck hospital, officials said.

The Dutch government, which initially said 43-year-old Johan Friso's life was in danger later issued an update saying "his condition is stable but not out of danger."

"Her Majesty the Queen and (Friso's wife) Princess Mabel are with Prince Friso," the Dutch statement said, adding that "doctors treating him will only be able to give a prognosis in a matter of days."

Stefan Jochum, a spokesman for the municipality of Lech and its ski regions, said the accident happened early Friday afternoon as the prince was on slopes away from the marked Lech ski runs and laden with snow after weeks of record falls. He said the prince was accompanied by three other skiers. Other officials said only one other person was with Friso.

The Lech municipal office said a regional avalanche warning issued for the day was four on the five-point scale, meaning the danger was high.

"A snow slide came down and the prince was buried as the only member of the group" said Jochum in a telephone interview. A rescue helicopter was on the scene within minutes and after Friso was located, he was resuscitated and flown to the hospital, Jochum said.

The Austria Press Agency cited Lech Mayor Ludwig Muxel as saying Friso was buried for about 20 minutes by a snow mass that measured around 30 meters (more than 30 yards) by 40 meters (more than 40 yards) when it hit him.

Spokeswoman Pia Herbst of the Lech region tourist authority said rescuers found Friso through signals of an avalanche transceiver on his body.

Dutch national broadcaster NOS broke into its regular programming to give the story rolling minute-to-minute coverage as the news broke, speaking to medical experts and avalanche specialists.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, in comments carried by NOS radio, said he had told the queen and the prince's wife that "the whole Dutch people sympathizes with them very intensely."

"The situation is that the prince is stable, but his life not yet out of danger, and (in) the coming days, the expectation is that further prognoses will follow."

"There's nothing more (to say) than that the best doctors are there," he said. "Austria naturally has very good medical care, we are fully confident in them ? but further we really just have to wait."

Friso's two brothers, heir to the throne Willem-Alexander and Prince Constantijn, were traveling to Austria with their families Friday evening, NOS reported.

Online polls done around the April 30 Queen's Day national holiday reflect a high degree of affection for the royals. The last one in 2011 showed that three-quarters of 547 respondents were happy with the queen.

Friso was in Lech along with other members of the royal family, whose members ski regularly there. The upscale resort area has also been a popular winter holiday destination for Tom Cruise, the late Princess Diana and other celebrities.

The second of Beatrix's three sons, Friso gave up any claim to the Dutch throne to marry Dutch commoner Mabel Wisse Smit, in 2004. The pair has two daughters, Luana and Zaria. He most recently worked as financial director at Urenco, the European uranium-enrichment consortium.

The crucial moment in his life as a member of the Dutch nobility came with his 2003 engagement to then-commoner Wisse Smit.

After the pair announced their intention to marry in 2003, Dutch media revealed that Wisse Smit's previous friendships included contacts while she was in college with a well-known figure in the Dutch underworld, a drug dealer who was later slain.

The couple publicly acknowledged having been "naive and incomplete" during her vetting process before joining the royal family. Then-Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende signaled he could not recommend the marriage to parliament for approval.

They married anyway, a decision that meant Friso's removal from the line of succession.

The couple are still part of Beatrix's family and attend important royal functions. Mabel has been granted the title "Princess Mabel" and Friso has an array of noble titles, including "Prince of Oranje-Nassau" ? but not "Prince of the Netherlands."
